March 4th to 8th marks Apprentice Week and we have profiled one our 4th year mechanical apprentices by asking a few questions about him and his time with Norbord.
Why did you apply for the apprenticeship programme at Norbord?
“I had heard good things about working at Norbord through word of
mouth. It is local to where I live and has a major presence in the area.
I left school after 5th year with 3 Highers and National 5 awards and got into the apprenticeship programme. I had always wanted to be a engineer, but didn’t want to go to university, I felt this was the best option for me.”
What do you enjoy about your role?
“I get to do something new every day, I am always learning something. I like the team I work with and getting to work with different people in different areas of the business.”
What were your main concerns when you started your apprenticeship?
“I worried I wouldn’t be good enough or be able to pick it all up. I think these are concerns most young people have when joining a new organisation. Once I started, I received lots of support and picked things up quickly, I surprised myself.”
What makes Norbord a good employer for apprentices?
“They support further education and a high level of training. I don’t think I’d get in another organisation. Apprentices are well looked after in terms of support from management and colleagues.”
What’s it like working in such a large environment with 250 employees?
“Having to work with different types of people day in day out has definitely helped with my communication skills. I was quite a shy person when I was young and working at Norbord has helped me to gain more confidence in myself and my abilities.”
