Wood is the focus of St Ives Studios refurbishment

Artists keen to carry on the tradition of working in the Cornish town of St Ives can now rent space in the legendary Porthmeor Studios after a comprehensive renovation of the timber-framed building.
The St Ives landmark, which is located on the windswept Porthmeor Beach, has been used as a studio by a number of world-famous artists, including Francis Bacon and Terry Frost. They would work in the dilapidated studios upstairs while the pilchard fisherman worked downstairs.
Now, the iconic Cornish building has been given the ultimate makeover - creating eight studios, all with high ceilings, great light and wooden walls and floors.
Chris Hubbert, the director of the project told The Cornishman, "Over 100 years of Atlantic storms had seriously weakened the fabric of the building, and the scantle slate roof had reached the end of its life."
He added that the windows were beginning to rot and the roof was letting water in several places. Using wood based panels specially engineered for use in humid conditions, such as Sterling OSB3 and Norbord’s Roofdek can help to protect timber-frame buildings from the impact of rain and wind.
Locals in St Ives are extremely pleased to have the studios operational once more and helped to raise £65,000 towards the £4 million needed for the project.
