Innovative carpenters source sustainable wood from coppiced forest

Two Cambridge entrepreneurs are running a successful woodwork businesses using wood from sustainable sources.
Tim Atkins and Duncan Dodds build rustic, well-ventilated rooms from trees from the woods nearby or trees that have blown over. Tim also has a craft business, carving animals from wood - he was inspired to start this while travelling in New Zealand.
Tim has created giant apes for adventure firm Go Ape, as well as large-scale totem poles and wooden butterflies. He even has his own outdoor workspace in the woods now. He told Cambridge News, “I used to carve on the roadside because there was nowhere else to do it, but then I was asked to look after the wood, so I moved into it. It’s not your average office.”
Tim and Duncan are very keen on pursuing the building side of the business, which came about after Tim was approached to build an airy classroom for a local primary school. This was when he partnered up with Duncan, who has the construction skills needed for building projects.
Tim is quoted as saying that business is going well for Artisan Structures, commenting, “I often have more work than I can cope with, and yes, I make a good living. I like being outdoors and I enjoy the variety of the work.”
