History in Europe
Norbord has been supplying products to Europe for over 40 years. We first entered the market in 1964, completing the acquisition of our current UK sites in 1999. In 2004, we strengthened the European component of the business further, adding the Genk facility in Belgium to our operations.
Today, Norbord brands are some of the most trusted across the continent and our products are widely used in the construction, DIY and furniture industries. As a business, we continue to place customers, standards of excellence, control of costs, safety and environmental concerns at the centre of our activities. And we’re proud to be regarded as the industry expert by our customers across Europe.
Our site at Cowie in Scotland was the UK’s first manufacturing facility for MDF. Operating state of the art production lines in both MDF and particleboard, the site leads the industry in product development.
Genk became part of the Norbord European group in 2004 and since this time has strengthened its environmental credentials. Today, the mill produces OSB within the scope of its FSC® chain of custody certification for distribution across Europe, with key markets in the Benelux countries, Scandinavia, Germany, France and Britain.
Our Inverness mill in Scotland was the first in Europe to manufacture Oriented Strand Board (OSB). It was also the first OSB plant in Europe to receive Forestry Stewardship Council accreditation, demonstrating our commitment to the environment. Production at Inverness and Genk combines to make Norbord one of the largest OSB producers in Europe.
